From Overwhelmed to Organized: A Student's Guide to Staying Up-to-Date with Readings

By Kaylie Fulwiler

Do you find yourself struggling to keep up with all of your readings? Do you feel like you're drowning in pages and pages of textbooks? You're not alone! Here are a few of my best tips for how to keep up with readings:

  • Create a schedule: I use a spreadsheet to organize my readings and deadlines for the week and block times in my calendar to complete them! Many of the other execs use scheduling software like Notion, or Google Calendar. Schedule reminders on your phone for what you need to accomplish daily.

  • Use active reading techniques: I like to highlight key words/facts and create a list of these in my notes to be turned into flashcards later! Helpful flashcard apps include Quizlet and Anki (or good old handmade flashcards!). Try to summarize what you have learned after each page/subsection of the chapter in a few sentences - make a summary sheet with important information (good for making study guides later on!).

  • Use active recall techniques: Think about the main topics and key takeaways from the chapter/section without looking at the text or your notes after you have completed your reading. When studying, you can use the “blurt” technique where you write down everything you remember without looking, and then using your notes, identify key areas you missed and fill in those details.

  • Prioritize: Prioritize which readings are most critical/difficult, and get those out of the way first!

  • Stay Engaged: To avoid losing focus, try to relate what you are reading to real world examples! Take brain breaks - do yoga, take a walk, dance it out. Eat well and stay hydrated!

Lastly, it is important to not be hard on yourself if you fall behind. It’s also normal to feel scared, overwhelmed, or unmotivated - all of us execs have been there. Instead of stressing about not keeping up with your readings, prioritize and readjust your schedule, and keep trying your best! You've GOT THIS! Good luck!

Diary of a Psych Student

Welcome to Diary of a Psych Student! This is a heartfelt informal supportive space where you can rant, scream, cry, and laugh about the issues and triumphs of being a psychology student here at the University of Calgary. Here you can write about what's on your mind whether it's related to your degree or career. Our team will then offer you a response in the next issue. Rest assured you will have a digital shoulder to either cry on, rant to, or celebrate with.

Too often we undervalue ourselves and we look around at our peers and think that they've got everything together. The goal is to create a digital supportive space where students can see that they are not alone in their struggles. We hope to foster a sense of community and reassurance. Remember it's okay to seek help and it's normal to face challenges.

But it’s not all about struggles—this column also celebrates the good news! Whether you’ve achieved a personal milestone, aced an exam, or found joy in a new hobby, we’d love to share and celebrate with you on your successes!

September Entry

Dear Diary,
I don't feel that I want to do honours/research, but I need it if I want to continue in Psychology after undergrad. I am also feeling overwhelmed because it's so competitive to get into grad school and I don't know what I am going to do after undergrad.

Response from our team

Hey Diary Writer,

Thanks for reaching out! I totally understand where you’re coming from as a 4th year undergraduate soon to graduate this year. For me, it took until a week into the honours supervisor meeting weeks (that 3 week period in October) to decide to apply into honours.  I sent emails to eight potential profs, and every one of them was already taken! Yikes!  (eventually I was able to get a supervisor) I didn’t want to do it at first, because I didn’t really like research and I didn’t know if I wanted to spend an entire year doing it. So, what changed my mind? I talked to some friends in PSYCHS who were doing honours, and they said really positive things about it. Many of them disclosed that they felt skeptical at first, but were really grateful for the opportunity to do research. Some, believe it or not,  even said it was fun! And I agree! Especially when you find a supervisor who does research you enjoy, it can be a really fulfilling and engaging process.

Grad school applications can definitely be extremely stressful. I just finished applying to one, and I feel relief and fear all at once. I know that it is extremely competitive to get into grad school, but all the more reason to engage in some research and see if you enjoy it and want to pursue it later on. I also think it definitely is useful to apply and see what happens (you get practice and in some cases, feedback!). I know a few honour students from last year who didn’t get into grad school, and they are now working as research assistants or behavioural interventionists. Many people say that a gap year is extremely helpful to them. I definitely think it gives you the chance to explore your options some more and build more skills you won’t be able to when you are busy in school. I know everyone tries to rush, but taking it slow is okay.

Regardless of the outcome, do what feels right for you. It doesn’t hurt to apply and get that research experience. But, if you don’t feel ready, see how you feel about a fifth year, or simply don’t do it. There are other options for sure. You can do a few summer studentships (paid research!), or try a PSYC 499, 504 or 505. Whatever you choose, it will turn out okay. Trust yourself, and follow what feels right for you. If you ever need to chat some more, please feel free to reach out to us at our email ([email protected])

You can also come to some of our upcoming events to give you more insight:

  • Honours information night - October 23, 2024

  • Grad school panel - November 6, 2024

We wish you lots of luck on your journey,
